Bas Jan Ader's art career lasted only five years. From 1970 to 1975 he played out his notions of the weight of gravity in short films that showed him hanging from trees (Broken Fall, Organic), biking into an Amsterdam canal (Fall 2, Amsterdam) or sitting in a chair atop a roof before propelling to the ground (Fall 1, Los Angeles).

Använder  Bastiaan Johan Christiaan "Bas Jan" Ader (19 April 1942 – disappeared 1975) was a Dutch conceptual and performance artist, and photographer. His work was in many instances presented as photographs and film of his performances. He made performative installations, including Please Don't Leave Me (1969). Bas Jan Ader was born to idealistic ministers in the Dutch Reformed Church on April 19, 1942.

During Bas Jan Ader’s tragic last work, In search of the miraculous, 1975, the artist vanished while crossing the Atlantic in a small sailboat, never to be seen again. Responding to cultural pressures like the Vietnam War and the nascent field of feminist art, the artists poignantly used “disappearing” as a response to the anxiety of the 1970s.

Bas Jan Ader, “In Search of the Miraculous (One Night in Los Angeles)” (1973), one of 18 silver gelatin prints with handwritten text in white ink, 8 x 10 inches (© Estate of Bas Jan Ader / Mary Sue Bas Jan Ader was born 19th April 1942, to Bastiaan Ader and Johanna Ader-Appels. He was born in Winschoten, Netherlands, and his parents were both ministers of the Calvinist church, which was a break-away from the Catholic church. Ader was only two when his father was killed by the Nazis because he helped Jewish people escape the Holocaust. The performer and video artist Bas Jan Ader in this sense has reached the limits of creative despair, turning his whole life into an eccentric, but from this no less tragic artistic act.

To see him seated in a chair on his rooftop and slowly topple off it to the ground in slow motion may seem at first to be a dumb college stunt but the images resonate and stay with you. I’m Too Sad to Tell You is a mixed media artwork by conceptual artist Bas Jan Ader. The work includes a three-minute black-and-white silent film, still photographs and a post card all related to him crying for an unknown reason. Bas Jan Ader´s mother outlived both her husband and son.
